The Montsant DO covers 16 municipalities, distributed between the Priorat , Catalonia and the Ribera de Ebro region.
The climate is Mediterranean but with continental influences from the Ebro river and sea breezes. Winters are usually cold and summers are dry and hot, with minimum temperatures usually reaching 9°C and maximum temperatures up to 21°C.
The soils in the region are generally composed of different types of rocks, with the Falset-Marçà area dominated by igneous rocks, while the Sierra de Montsant area has a greater predominance of sedimentary rocks.
