The DO Empordà is located in the extreme northeast of Catalonia, with 55 municipalities distributed between two counties.
This region is affected by a north wind called Tramuntana, key to the climatic conditions of Empordá. Winters in the region are mild, while summers are hot but moderated by breezes from the sea. The average temperature in the region varies between 14°C and 16°C, while rainfall averages 600 mm.
Although the soils of the region are mostly sandy, Empordà also has other soil types, such as the alluvial soils in the plains or the slate and granite soils at the foot of the mountains.
