Tucked away in the verdant heart of Italy lies the Colli Altotiberini DOC, a gem within the picturesque region of Umbria. Dominated by the serpentine course of the Tiber River, this wine-producing area benefits immensely from the unique microclimate influenced by the river's presence. The temperate environment, enriched by the alternating influences of both maritime and continental air currents, alongside fertile, well-drained soils, provides an ideal backdrop for viticulture.
In the terraced vineyards that gently rise above the Tiber, grape varieties both indigenous and international flourish. The reds are dominated by the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering the robustness and depth that is characteristic of these varieties. Meanwhile, Pinot Nero introduces a touch of elegance with its delicate aromas and nuanced flavors.
On the white front, the Colli Altotiberini is renowned for its cultivation of Grechetto, an indigenous variety that exudes fresh apple and pear notes with an underlying almond finish. It is often complemented by Trebbiano, which adds a citrusy zest and floral character, making the whites of this DOC refreshing and highly versatile.
The marriage of environment and grape varieties in the Colli Altotiberini DOC results in wines that are both expressive of their terroir and universally appealing. The region stands as a testament to Umbria’s quiet prowess in the world of winemaking.
