The Zitsa wine sub-region is located in the Epirus wine region of northwestern Greece. Zitsa is a small town and a municipality located in the Ioannina regional unit of Epirus. It is situated approximately 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Ioannina, which serves as a central hub within the Epirus wine region.
Zitsa has a cool, continental climate due to its high altitude and proximity to the Pindos Mountains. Summers are usually mild and cool, due to the influence of the mountains near the region, while during the winter temperatures can reach below freezing, which can lead to snowfall or frost. In addition to this, the region has a large thermal oscillation between day and night, so the days are warm and the nights are cooler. As a result, the region's grapes have a higher natural acidity and a more complex flavor.
On the other hand, among the predominant soils of Zitsa we can mention limestone soils, marl soils, sandy loam soils, and schist soils.
In the Zitsa wine region of Greece, the most planted grape varietals are primarily white, with a focus on the indigenous Debina grape. Debina is the dominant grape variety grown in this region and is used to produce the renowned Zitsa PDO wines.
