It is the capital city of the Ioannina regional unit and is situated near Lake Pamvotida. The Ioannina wine region encompasses the area around the city of Ioannina and extends to the surrounding municipalities and villages within the regional unit.
The wine region of Ioannina has a Mediterranean climate. However, due to its location it also receives continental influences. For that reason, summers are mild, with moderate temperatures due to the proximity to Lake Pamvotida and the mountains surrounding the region, while winters often record temperatures below freezing. Finally, rainfall in the region tends to be moderate, and somewhat more concentrated during the winter.
Regarding the soils, in this wine region there is a greater predominance of limestone and marl soils, which provide a particular minerality to the wines of the region. However, Ioannina also has other types of soils, such as sandy loam or alluvial soils.
